<image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Maddie has been teaching at Mud since 2015, starting in the summer camp program and adult handbuilding classes. “Clay is a versatile material that people of every age enjoy working in.” When not teaching at Mud, she teaches Ceramics, Photography and 3D Design at Madison High School and teaches graduate courses as a professor at the Art of Education University. Maddie has dedicated her life to the process of creating art and teaching others the benefits of expression. In her own work, she draws inspiration from the beauty and whimsy of life. She loves working with raw clay and turning it into something beautiful. She values the importance of a clay community like Mud because she gets inspiration and feedback from peers. Maddie holds a Bachelor’s in Arts Education from SUNY New Paltz and a Masters in Arts & Cultural Management from Pratt Institute. <image:title>Sam Owen - Sam Owen</image:title>
<image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Sam started her journey in clay back in 2014 with a weekly evening class at a local school. After a few years she landed at Mud where she returned to learning the basics with Mel and then through more advanced classes and lots of practice she honed and developed her technique and creative voice. Mud not only provided the supportive community she was searching for but also an opportunity for a second career post retirement! Clay gives Sam the satisfaction of making something functional and beautiful. The feel of a finished pot, the roughness of the bare clay and the smoothness of the glaze have led her to experiment with different surface techniques. She creates pots with simple lines and forms and often leaves some or all of the surface unglazed. Sam especially likes making teapots and in recent years has expanded her glazing horizons with wood fire and soda gas firing. She hopes that through her teaching, she can share her love of pottery and help new members improve their technique and become more confident in their ability while unleashing their artistic side. <image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Becky’s Mud journey started with months of watching Instagram pottery videos, participating in a Mud Couples’ Night, and taking an 8-week class. That was all it took for her to realize clay is magical and addictive. She found the tactile experience of the clay and the process of creation to be both “super healing and an antidote to the chaos of being a human on planet earth.” Becky loves making functional pottery because it infuses magic and beauty into the everyday routines of life – art that can actually be used. Mud gives her the gift of community – a place where she can learn and improve her skill by giving feedback and sharing ideas and experiences. Becky also values the enriching connections created in the studio with other clay addicts. Becky is a teacher by trade, with a Masters in Education. She uses those skills when teaching in the studio. She wants her clay students to feel supported and meet their individual goals – hopefully with some laughter along the way. <image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher | Studio Manager Miranda came to Mud by way of a gift. Her fiance got her a gift certificate for an 8-week class for Valentine’s Day four years ago and she’s been hooked ever since! “Clay has provided me with an outlet where I can be mindful while creating. Clay has taught me to not only enjoy the finished project but also be more present during each step.” The clay community at Mud has been important to Miranda. She loves being inspired by others and bouncing ideas off other members. She loves that there are days where she listens to music and glazes for hours as well as days where she talks to people while her projects just sit on the table. Miranda’s work is often inspired by nature and her parents’ gardens at her childhood house in Vermont. You may find her working on a gnome big enough for a garden or small enough to hide among indoor plants and succulent boxes. She loves to teach and share her excitement about pottery. One of Miranda’s favorite things has been working events and getting to see people's reactions to working with clay for the first time. Instagram | @madebymebie</image:caption>

<image:title>Miriam Reimer - Miriam Reimer</image:title>
<image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Miriam loves working with clay because when it is perfectly centered, spinning on the wheel in her hands at high speed, the world disappears. That feeling of focus keeps her grounded in the important creative expression of her work, and the clarity it affords keeps her grounded in life. Miriam started taking classes with Melanie a number of years ago after "outgrowing" other studio spaces. She was immediately drawn to the Mud vibe, community atmosphere and camaraderie. She believes that nothing beats being surrounded by a motley crew of creative people who inspire, mentor and lift each other up. Beginners learn and grow, those more-seasoned help teach, and we all have fun getting messy and making friends along the way. In her teaching, Miriam’s goal is to teach the easiest, most fool-proof methods of creating functional pottery pieces. She teaches with a positive, encouraging can-do attitude, without striving for perfection. Perfect is boring! Instagram | @GlazeOnStudio Website | www.glazeonstudio.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Dileri has loved working with clay since she first played with it in high school, and then more formally in a college ceramics course. She took classes over the years, but had not really done anything with clay since the early 2000s. Over the pandemic, she got hooked watching The Great British Throwdown, which motivated her to look for a studio where she could take classes, which is how she landed at Mud and was hooked again from day 1. Dileri feels like she has found a warm and supportive community here. She learns continuously from teachers and other members - clay artists are so generous with their knowledge! She’s thrilled to be able to share her love for this craft that allows her to express her creativity, while making objects that are both useful and beautiful. Dileri would describe her pottery style as simple and functional. Her quest to make the perfect mug continues… Instagram | @digknit</image:caption>

<image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Aaron is a former academic at Parsons School of Design who taught statistics and data visualization for nearly 20 years, but is now quite happy to be working with and teaching clay. He is a functional potter who works mostly on the wheel and incorporates handbuilt and slipcast components. He’s happiest making pots with lids, and only recently fell out of hate with making handles. He mostly works out of his home studio nearby, but teaches at Mud to be a part of the vibrant community and talented potters who learn and make here. Instagram | @throwfireglaze</image:caption>

<image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Meg loves working with clay because it lets her lose track of time and create. A block of mud can be made into anything from a coffee mug to a garden sculpture. It can be functional or fanciful. And working with people from all different walks of life who come together to create is so inspiring. She has always had an interest in clay and when Mud opened in Madison, she knew it was just a matter of time before she was going to be a regular. A clay community is important because we learn and are inspired from each other. Everyone has different strengths and ideas, when we work side by side, we can grow through the process. Creating and working with your hands is so rewarding! Meg was an elementary school teacher and learned to meet each of her students where they were and to create a positive learning experience for them based on their learning style. She feels she still can do that with the people in her pottery classes. Everyone comes in with unique strengths and learning styles, and Meg loves to encourage that. <image:caption>Studio Staff Danielle found clay in her last semester of college, and was immediately hooked. Life took her away from clay, and back again a few times, but it never left her mind. Finding Mud has been inspiring, she loves being part of such a warm community of creative people to learn from. Danielle loves how clay incorporates all four elements of earth, air, water, and fire, and finds the intersection of form and function so satisfying to explore - there is always a new building or glazing technique to learn, the medium of clay is endless! Danielle enjoys both wheel throwing and hand building, and is currently obsessed with making maracas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Studio Technician Corrine started her pottery journey by taking an eight-week class to overcome an artist's block. Little did she know, this would spark a profound love for clay. Eager to blend her passion for illustration with her newfound love for pottery, she began drawing directly onto her pieces. Corrine’s process evolved into screenprinting her illustrations directly onto the pottery, allowing the designs to be the primary focal point while keeping the forms simple. Today, she is proud to work from her own studio space in Manufacturer's Village, East Orange, NJ, where she continues to explore and expand the boundaries of her illustrated pottery. She took ceramics courses during college where she learned to throw on the wheel and make hand built creations but the part she enjoyed most was the behind the scenes steps! She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in May 2023 with a BS in Art and a minor in Entrepreneurship! Now she works at several art studios learning new things every day and most importantly running her business selling her own art! “Artworkbyal” was started in January 2020 and has been going strong since. Ally makes and sells paintings, prints, beaded mixed media pieces and more! Ally often sells her work at markets and art fairs where she loves to talk with other artists and art lovers! <image:caption>Clay Artist | Teacher Hannah loves how clay can be such a creative outlet, that can be both inspiring and humbling at the same time. Since Hannah works from her home studio which is close by to the Montclair Mud studio, she reached out to introduce herself in case any opportunities had opened up. She started with teaching the teen wheel throwing camps. Now she's excited to be teaching a teen wheel class this fall. It’s important to have a clay community because there’s always something you can learn from someone else. The collaborative environment often encourages more creativity and new ideas naturally come about. Hannah Mir loves creating things with her hands and really enjoys being a ceramic artist and teacher. She likes exploring the possibilities of clay and creating pieces that are both beautiful and functional. She is passionate about her craft and her love for nature is present in many of her creations, which often feature earthy tones. She also loves experimenting with new ways to do things with ceramics and enjoys sharing her passion and knowledge with all her students that she teaches. <image:caption>Clay Artist | Kids Instructor Maddie ended up at MudClay studio because after taking 1 ceramics class at her college, Drew University, she wanted more! She is passionate about working with kids. Since then, Maddie has been working summer camp and other kids events since 2022. Her favorite part about summer camp is glazing projects on the last day of camp! Maddie loves working with clay because of how therapeutic it is. She loves squishing clay into different shapes and using texture! Maddie also loves making super large ceramic sculptures. Maddie loves hand building and is still building on her wheel throwing skills. She’s currently obsessed with making large cobblestone houses! Her favorite part about being in a clay community is how welcoming and supportive the fellow clay addicts are! The members are always so nice and welcoming whenever she is in the studio. Maddie studied Music and Art during her undergraduate at Drew University, and will graduate with a Masters in Teaching in 2025! She hopes to be a public music or art teacher. <image:caption>Wheel Throwing and Life Sculpture Instructor I love working with clay because it gives me permission to get messy in a world that often expects us to stay clean, polished, and digital. There's something deeply grounding about shaping something with your hands—creating a form that’s completely new and undeniably yours. Clay responds to what you do, and to how you do it. It has rules, but they’re honest ones; every choice has a visible consequence. If you don’t listen to what it’s telling you—if you push too far or move too fast—it pushes back. I find comfort and clarity in that kind of relationship. It satisfies the buzzy, restless part of my brain in a way nothing else does. I came to this studio initially because it offered 24/7 open access, which was essential to the way I work. But I stayed because of the people. I could’ve built my own studio, but I didn’t want to work in isolation. I wanted to be in a space where I could grow, be challenged, and share ideas—where the energy of other artists could help push me forward. Being part of this community not only made me a better maker, it also gave me the chance to give back. Inspiring others and watching students grow is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. As a teacher, I tend to be very methodical and hands-on. I like the structure of ceramics - clay has stages, and certain things can only happen at certain times. I try to help students understand that rhythm, that timing. I’ll often guide them (physically hold their hands if needed), helping them feel what a movement should be like, not just see it. I believe in clarity, but not in perfection. Perfection was never the goal—progress is. If you can do a little better than last time, and make a new mistake instead of repeating the old one, you’re doing great. More than anything, I want students to see the beauty in what’s handmade and imperfect. A slightly off-center bowl or wobbly rim isn’t a flaw—it’s a signature. It’s proof that something was shaped by real hands, by effort and curiosity and learning. In a community like this one, we get to share those moments of discovery together. And that’s what makes clay so powerful—it’s not just the object you make, it’s the process of making it, and the people you get to do that with. Instagram | @sassiceramics</image:caption>

<image:caption>Clay Artist | Studio Tech I love the monumental malleability of clay-it can be shaped and formed with an organic flair or with the utmost precision. Clay also has a mind of its own -give it what it wants, it will bend to your will; overwork it or be careless with it, it will break your heart. After a decade of working in high volume production studios, I decided to focus more time on making my own work. I joined Mud because I wanted to be in an environment that focused more on community and fostering experimentation and exploration. Having a community is important because it is easy to get stuck in the same ways of making. The clay community is always a treasure trove of new ideas and creative inspiration. In my current work I am interested in exploring how clay body and glaze application work in conjunction with line to elevate form and shape. Ideally, the way the glaze interacts with the clay body and carved lines should enhance the angles, curves, and overall form of the object.</image:caption>
